Galveston Island Railroad Museum

Railroad buffs will love both the modernity and antiquity of the exhibits that call the Galveston Island Railroad Museum home. The People’s Gallery/Depot in its current configuration was completed in 1933. The southern end of the building once housed a Fred Harvey House. The building acted as a passenger depot from 1933 to 1967 and currently features displays of Railroad China, photos of the devastation from Hurricane Ike, Railroad tools and other photos from the era. In December, the Santa Train has been known to make an appearance, and in April, there is a festival for children.

Galveston Island State Park

Located in Galveston County, on the western end of Galveston Island, is the Galveston Island State Park. Originally, the 2,013 acre site was privately owned and was later acquired from the State Parks in 1969 and opened in 1975. Scientists believe that Galveston Island is approximately 5,000 years old, with a fascinating history of Spanish settlement that dates back to the 16th century. Founder of Galveston, Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish Explorer and slave trader, became shipwrecked here in 1520 and after being enslaved by the resident Native Americans, he escaped and made his way from Galveston to Mexico.

The Grand Opera House

The Grand Opera House is one of the most beautiful opera houses in the United States, and one that has a very potent legacy on the island of Galveston. The opera house survived two devastating storms, one in 1900 and one in 1915, Hurricanes Carla and Alicia. It also managed to survive years of neglect, and locals consider it miraculous that it has held up so beautifully for so long. Between the years of 1974 and 1990, the opera house went under an $8 million renovation, and in 1993, the Texas Legislature deemed the Grand Opera House the “Official Opera House for Texas.”

Completed in 1895, the 28,000 square-foot Moody Mansion was recently restored to its turn-of-the-century beauty, and opened its doors to visitors from around the world. Today, visitors can wander the halls of this sprawling estate with 20 rooms to explore. The Moody family was established as a cornerstone of American finance. Their empire was originally based on cotton, and later expanded to ranching, banking, insurance and hotel properties. W.L Moody Jr. purchased the property just after the 1900 storm, and the estate housed the Moody family until 1986.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places at the national level of significance in the area of architecture, it is hailed as the one of the most significant Victorian houses in the entire nation. Originally built for Colonel Walter Gresham and his wife, Josephine, Colonel Gresham came to Galveston as an attorney and entrepreneur from Virginia after his service ended in the Civil War. He was one of the original founders of the Gulf, Santa Fe and Colorado Railroad. This staggering mansion is teeming with beautiful artifacts lovingly curated by the Gresham Family.
